The Schaefer Lab aims at understanding why certain RNA degradation products are stable and long-lived. Specifically, we study the phenomenon of stress-induced tRNA fragmentation, and the structure, modification status and potential function of the resulting tRNA-derived small RNAs in stressed cells, but also as signaling molecules between cells.
